The inaugural Celebration of Writing will take place
9 am to 4 pm, Thursday, Oct. 20 at the Heritage and Frontier Rooms, OMU.
Workshops for journaling, writing graphic novels and poetry are featured, along with a keynote address by
Oklahoma author and Oklahoma Hall of Fame member
Presented by the First Year Composition.

Join First Year Composition as they celebrate writing with the university through workshops and fun creative writing activities! Among the more formal events are an Awards Ceremony for our stellar student writers and instructors, followed by a keynote address by creative writer, Rilla Askew, titled “Write Where You Are.” A variety of writing and poetry workshops will be facilitated throughout the day by Roxanne Mountford, Robert Vollmar, Jonathan Stalling, and Susan Kates.
Keynote Address: Write Where You Are by Rilla Askew, 12:15 p.m. Frontier Room
Rilla will speak about the process of becoming a writer; the importance of finding source and subject in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry; and how, although as writers we may reach for the stars, we all begin exactly the same way: right where we are.
Awards Ceremony, Honoring Student Writers and Instructors, 11:00 a.m. Heritage Room
Roxanne Mountford: Journal Writing for Life, 9:00 a.m. Heritage Room
In this workshop, participants will learn about ways to keep a journal and engage in writing about topics of interest to them.
Robert Vollmar: Comics Writing, 10:00 a.m., Heritage Room
Jonathan Stalling: Building Poetry, 1:30 p.m. Heritage Room
Dr. Jonathan Stalling, professor of English and curator of the Chinese Literature Translation Archive, and his students will give a workshop on how to compose the Classical Chinese poetic form "jueju" in English. The workshop will include hands-on exercises, interactive games, and directions for participating in the third annual Newman Prize for Young Writers English Jueju competition.
Susan Kates, Life Writing: Taking a Page to Keep, 3:00 p.m. Heritage Room
Join Susan Kates for a unique opportunity to participate in an autobiographical writing exercise that you will want to hold on to well into the future.
