National Child Abuse Prevention Month was first declared by presidential proclamation in 1983 during the month of April.
Since then, April has been a time to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse.
Eleven out of 1,000 children in Oklahoma are in foster care with a 15 percent increase in the last five years of children entering the state child welfare system due to abuse and neglect.
