ONE-TIME INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT (OTIS)
Renewable Term Faculty
The standard teaching load for renewable term faculty is six sections per year (usually 3+3).Any reduction in this teaching load must be negotiated with the Dean’s Office and approved in writing on an annual basis.
The salary for each course taught by renewable term faculty should equal 1/6th of their appointed salary. The salary must be distributed equally among each section that the instructor is teaching. For example, if an instructor is appointed at a rate of $30,000 for the academic year and is teaching three sections each semester, the salary for each section would be $5,000. Exceptions must be approved in writing by the Dean’s Office.
The standard teaching load for full-time temporary faculty is six sections per year (usually 3+3). Any reduction in this teaching load must be negotiated with the Dean’s Office.
The salary for each course taught by full-time temporary faculty should equal 1/6th of their appointed salary. The salary must be distributed equally among each section that the instructor is teaching. Exceptions must be approved in writing by the Dean’s Office.
Regular Faculty (Tenured, Tenure-Track, Renewable Term) on Overload/Supplemental
The salary per section for tenured and tenure track faculty who are teaching as an overload must be approved in advance by the Dean’s Office. To request overload pay for a Regular Faculty member the "College of Arts and Sciences Overload Request" form (Overload Request) must be filled out and submitted to the Dean's Office.
Faculty may only receive overload pay for extra teaching if they meet their normal in-load teaching obligation.
Overload Pay Scale:
If a faculty member is teaching outside of their unit, the salary is paid by supplemental pay and is subject to the 25% cap on earnings from internal university assignments unless the Provost approves an exception. Requests for exceptions should be submitted to the Dean’s Office by memo.
Units that plan to use the President’s Retired Faculty Funds program are required to gain advance authorization from the Dean’s Office and the Provost’s Office.Instructions and the request form can be found on the Provost’s website (http://www.ou.edu/provost/pronew/content/memorand.html).
If approved, the cost of instruction for these sections should be listed under “Department Funds” on the OTIS form and the source noted in the Comments column.
The Units are responsible for any salary in excess of the amount that is approved by the Provost.
ONE-TIME INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT (OTIS)
Procedures to Request Funds
The purpose of the One-Time Instructional Support (OTIS) program is to provide academic units with funding to staff additional sections of classes and/or to expand the enrollment of an existing section. To be eligible for OTIS funding, the unit must first have fully allocated all of the instructional funds available in its own budget – including the GA Pool and grant release funds that have been earmarked to replace teaching. OTIS funds may be requested to provide salary for sections taught by renewable term faculty, temporary faculty (visitors, adjuncts, etc), permanent faculty teaching overload sections, and student assistants. Please note that OTIS funding for faculty on leave will normally only be provided if salary funds are freed up as a result of the leave (e.g., leaves of absence without pay, two-semester sabbaticals, etc.). To request these funds the "College of Arts and Sciences Request for a Temporary Replacement of a Faculty Member" form (CAS Request for a Temporary Replacement of a Faculty Member) must be filled out and approved by the Dean's Office. After the preliminary OTIS request has been submitted, any course additions, course deletions, or changes in salary must be approved by the Chair/Director and submitted to the Dean’s Office for approval.
The Dean’s Office will notify units when the preliminary One-Time Instructional Support requests are due. After being notified, complete the Teaching Load and Course Enrollment Management system (https://webapps.ou.edu/otis/) and email Cari Harris at email@example.com once completed or with any questions.
To receive funding, all changes to the OTIS request must be submitted prior to the end of the fourth week of the semester.Changes to the OTIS request will NOT be accepted after the fourth week of the semester.
Instructions for completing the Teaching Load and Course Enrollment Management system can be found at https://webapps.ou.edu/otis/docs/OTIS_Guide.pdf. Please call or email Cari Harris at firstname.lastname@example.org or (405) 325-7544 with any questions.
