"Voices of Light": Multi-media showing of "The Passion of Joan of Arc"

Sun, April 30, 20173:00 PM

The University of Oklahoma Combined Choirs, in collaboration with the Norman Philharmonic, will present Voices of Light April 30, 2017 at 3:00pm.

Voices of Light is a unique multi-media event which combines a live performance of Richard Einhorn’s contemporary music with the 1928 silent film, The Passion of Joan of Arc by Carl Th. Dreyer. The film brings to life the trial and death of Joan of Arc. Born in 1412, Joan was an illiterate young woman who led an army, was burned at the stake, and long after her untimely death was canonized a saint. Einhorn’s score is taken from the writings of female medieval mystics, including Joan of Arc herself. The composer brings to it a combination of historical research in medieval chant and his keen appreciation of musical minimalism.

The performance will close a four-day conference that includes round table discussions to help raise awareness of gender equality. The collaborative efforts of this event will fuel innovations in scholarship, performance, and public engagement in the arts and humanities.
